Encephalartos middelburgensis

Encephalartos middelburgensis is a rare and critically endangered South African cycad, one of the more sought-after species among collectors — and unfortunately one of the most heavily poached in the wild.

Origin & habitat

• Endemic to a very small area around Middelburg in Mpumalanga province, South Africa (hence the name).
• Grows on rocky, grassy hillsides/outcrops at fairly high altitude.
• Wild populations are extremely small and fragmented — it’s classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with illegal collection for the horticultural trade being the primary threat (alongside habitat loss). Very few mature individuals remain in the wild.

Appearance

• Forms a solitary, upright trunk, eventually reaching a few meters in height with age (slow growing, as with all cycads).
• Leaves are a striking blue-grey to grey-green color, moderately recurved, with the leaflets often twisted along the leaf axis, giving the crown a somewhat spiky, textured appearance.
• Petioles (leaf stalks) are typically spined near the base.
• Male and female plants produce separate cones (cycads are dioecious); female cones are large and barrel-shaped.

Care basics

• Light: Full sun to bright light — this species handles strong sun well given its native rocky, exposed habitat.
• Water: Drought-tolerant once established; prefers well-drained conditions. Avoid soggy soil.
• Soil: Gritty, fast-draining mix — rocky/sandy loam mimics its natural habitat.
• Temperature: Reasonably cold-tolerant for a cycad given its higher-altitude origin, but still frost-sensitive when young.
• Growth rate: Very slow, as is typical for Encephalartos
